The Local Government election in Kano, northwest Nigeria, held on Saturday was characterized by violence and electoral malpractices, just as the voters complained about late arrival of election materials in most polling units.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adenrele Shinaba confirmed to P.M.NEWS that his men have arrested some of the offenders.

“I can not exactly tell you the number of people arrested so far because the election is still on-going; at end of the exercise, we will be able to tell you the total number. What is important is that we must ensure that all offenders face the wrath of the law.”

Though no deaths were recorded as at the time of filing this report, our Correspondent gathered that a number of people got injured as a result of disagreement among rival party supporters.

In Nasarawa Local Government Area, hoodlums waylaid a vehicle belonging to the African Independent Television (AIT) at Gama Ward and destroyed parts of the body.

Other areas where violence was pronounced include Kura, Kunchi, Shanono, Tsanyawa and Bebeji Local Government Areas.

Election materials were also reported to have mysteriously disappeared on getting to the polling units, while in some
areas, the election materials were destroyed by political thugs who engaged themselves in free-for-all fight.

Snatching of ballot boxes was also recorded in some areas.

The state Governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso confirmed stories of irregularities saying, “from the reports I’m receiving, I learnt that election materials were not supplied to some polling centers on time as well as cases of violence in some areas; but no one was killed and our security operatives are on top of the situation.”
